Are you…

  • Interested in energy and sustainability?
  • Looking for a first-class institution with first-class faculty and resources for advanced study?
  • Hoping to make a difference by providing engineering solutions to real-life problems?
  • Yearning to learn more?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then graduate study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign within the ACRC Research Center may be the place for you!

Application Process

To perform research within ACRC, prospective graduate students apply with the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Their interests are then forwarded to the ACRC for further review. Prospective post-doctoral associates and visiting scholars should contact the faculty directly.

Research Program

More than a dozen faculty members are involved in the ACRC research program. The systems under study include a wide range of thermal management and energy conversion systems.

Related topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Properties. Viscosities, vapor pressures, and densities of refrigerant-lubricant mixtures and refrigerant blends.
  • Processes. Heat transfer and pressure drop, frosting, controls, tribology, and oil circulation.
  • Components. Evaporators, condensers, capillary tubes, orifice tubes, ejectors, suction-line heat exchangers, insulation, and flexible refrigerant tubing.

The ACRC research program involves about 40 graduate students and more than 20 undergraduates. Many students are attracted by the opportunity to participate in industrially relevant research. Many of the Center’s students, upon graduation, are hired by ACRC’s industrial sponsors, some go to other industry employers, some go to national laboratories, and some go on to academic careers.
